Homemade Pop Tarts

What You Need; store bought pie dough, your favorite jam/jelly, 1 egg, 2 tablespoons water, 1 cup powdered sugar, 2 tablespoon milk, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla, sprinkles

What You Do

-Start by rolling out your pie dough. Now, store bought pie dough is my jam! Homemade pie dough can be so finicky and I’ve never gone wrong with store bought. I like to keep it in the freezer and always have it on hand during the Fall season. On a floured surface roll out your pie dough until it gets to about 1/4 inch thick or even a bit thinner! You’ll want it to be pretty thin so it crisps up nicely. If it is too thick then it can get gummy in the center.

-Use a biscuit cutter or large cookie cutter. Or use a butter knife to cut class pop tart square shapes. Just be sure to make them about two inches wide so you have enough space for the filling.

-Definitely enlist the help of your little ones! This would be such a great family brunch activity and everyone can fill them with whatever they want! Think; jam, jelly, peanut butter, nutella, cream cheese, even ham and cheese. Get crazy! Pop Tarts are essentially mini pies!

-Cut out an even number amount. You’ll need a bottom and top ;) Place them onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicon baking mat. If you don’t have either of those, the non-stick cooking spray will work. Even a smear of butter will work too!

-Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.

-Time to add the filling! Use a tablespoon measure and spoon the filling into the center. Have extra pie dough? Let your little ones play with it ;)

-In a small bowl, crack and whisk your egg with the water.

-Use your finger to brush the egg wash around the edges. This will act at your glue and seal the two pieces of pie dough together.

-Use a fork to crimp the edges closed!

-With a pastry brush, brush on the remaining egg wash to tops of each pop tart. This will give them a nice golden crust + color!

-Now bake these at 400 degrees for about 10-15 minutes or until golden and crisp.

-While your pop tarts bake. Whisk up the frosting! Whisk together the powdered sugar, food color, vanilla, and milk. If your mixture turns out too runny, just add a bit more powdered sugar. If your mixture is too thick, just add a bit more milk. Whisk until you get the perfect consistency.
